Available in our Feliding clinic.
It’s not unusual for dogs to experience anxiety when visiting the vet. There can be lots of noise, the smell of many other animals, lots of people, and this can be very overwhelming.
One of the ways to help dogs feel more at ease in the clinic is through repeated exposure to the clinic environment in quick sessions. We call these sessions Happy Visits.
What happens during a Happy Visit?
Our happy visits with the consult nurse are 10-minute sessions designed to help nervous dogs learn that the clinic isn’t such a scary place after all, to help build confidence and feel safe in the clinic – no pressure, no procedures, just friendly faces, gentle handling, and lots of treats.
Some dogs may need a number of visits on a single step to give them time to acclimate to the situation. The visits are always short, around 10 minutes in length.
Happy visits aren’t a one-and-done activity, positive reinforcement over a period of time is the key to success.
Information about your dog’s behaviour and demeanour during the Happy Visit is noted and shared with you, along with any recommendations.
With repeated happy visits, dogs can start to associate the vet clinic with just another activity, or even a positive one (we do have excellent treats!)
The cost? Absolutely nothing! Although bookings are essential.
How does it work?
During your initial visit, consult nurse Ash will have a brief chat with you and guide you and your dog through what to expect, while introducing positive, reward-based experiences (lots of treats).
If you have noticed any signs of fear, anxiety or reactivity, please let us know so these visits can be tailored to your dog’s individual needs.
Should additional support be beneficial, we offer a range of calming products and can advise on further options to help your dog feel more relaxed and confident.
Ash will discuss a program with you, depending on how your dog reacts. Regardless of the number of visits, they’ll still be free of charge.

FAQ
Can I get my dogs examined or have their nails clipped during a happy visit?
Having a procedure-free environment is a key part of the happy visits. Acclimating the dog to the clinic is the goal of the session.
Is there any cost?
No, there’s no cost. Happy Visits are free.
How many Happy Visits will my dog need?
It depends on the dog. For dogs that get very nervous, they may need visits over weeks or months, however long it takes them to learn that the vet isn’t always a scary thing.
What happens if my dog doesn’t show improvement with the happy visits?
If your dog shows high anxiety that isn’t lessening over time, we may talk to you about resources on training and behaviour, calming aids, or recommend a consult with a vet to consider underlying issues.
We can also put you in touch with one of our recommended experts in canine behaviour. They are very good at what they do, and we are happy to refer you.
